The Information reported on 12 October that OpenAI is negotiating with a stealth startup focused on AI video technology for filmmaking to hand over its discontinued Sora video model so it can re-enter the market as a professional film and TV tool. The startup was founded months ago by Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, former Sora research lead Bill Peebles and former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa; its name has not been disclosed. According to the report, the startup plans to take over and rework the Sora platform and build and sell software or services for production companies on top of the technology. Terms are not finalised, and it is unclear whether the startup would get Sora’s model weights. Earlier this year OpenAI halted work on the Sora model and its TikTok-style video app as it cut non-core, compute-heavy projects and shifted resources to enterprise AI and coding tools. Sora’s consumer app and web platform have already been shut down, and OpenAI also ended a roughly $1 billion partnership plan with Disney.
